Scranton

George Scranton

     George Scranton was born in Connecticut in 1811and moved to Belvediere, NJ in 1828.

     In 1840, he came to this area, then known as Slocum Hollow with his brother Selden to start an iron manufacturing plant.  In 1845, as leading partners of the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company they produced their first batch of iron nails but due to poor quality due to the brittleness, they were unsuccessful.

     They persevered however and in following year, they contracted with the Erie Railroad to product 10,000 tons of iron rail to extend the railroad.  In order to accomplish this, they requested financial assistant from their cousin, Joseph.  They were able to complete their contract with the Erie Railroad and gained continued success in their ventures.

     Considered to be city founders they were honored as the namesake for the city of Scranton, officially incorporated in 1851.

     George Scranton died in 1861.

James Blair

     James Blair was born in New Jersey in 1807.

     After running a merchantile store in Warren County, he joined his brother in 1831 to organize the Belvidere Bank.

     In 1841, they joined the Scranton Brothers to form the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company.   For many years, he was director of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, leading him to relocate to Scranton where he was an active leader in many local organizations including:  The People Street Railway, The Scranton Savings Banks, and the Moses Taylor Hospital.

     His home was located at Mulberry and Jefferson and is still standing today.  He died in 1897.

Hand

Alfred Hand

     Judge Alfred Hand was born in Honesdale in 1835.

     After graduating from Yale in 1857, he apprenticed under William Jessup of Montrose and was admitted to the bar of Susquehanna County in 1859.

     In 1860, he moved to Scranton, was admitted to the Lackawanna County bar and formed a partnership with Isaac Post.

     In 1879, he appointed to the position of Judge of the 11th judicial district of PA by Governor Hoyt.

     In 1880 he was appointed judge of the newly formed Lackawanna County.  And to the state supreme court in 1888.

     Some of the local institutions that he has been closely identified with include:  Third National Bank of Scranton, the Dickson Manufacturing Co., the Lackawanna Valley Coal Company, and the Pennsylvania Oral School, now known as the PA State School for the Deaf.
