Col. William Monies

Born in Scotland in 1827, he met his wife Mary on his way to America and they were married shortly after they arrived in Carbondale in 1849.  A baker by trade, Monies went to California in 1852 to take part in the gold rush.  After gaining financial success, he returned to Lackawanna County and joined Joseph Gillespie in a milling business at Providence.

After serving as a colonel in the Civil War, Monies sold his share of the mill to Gillespie and entered a partnership with Lewis Pughe to form the Star Baker.

As mayor of Scranton in 1869, he was active in the move to form Lackawanna County out of what was then part of Luzerne County.  When Lackawanna County was incorporated in 1878, he was appointed the county's first Treasurer.  Later he traveled back to his homeland in Scotland and died shortly after returning in 1881.
