Scranton Mausoleum

     Joseph H. Scranton was born in Connecticut and worked as a merchant in Georgia before locating to this area to join his cousins Selden and George Scranton as a partner in the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company.   He became general manager and one of the company's primary investors.

     He moved to Scranton in 1850 and in the early 1870's built his home at Ridge Row.  He died of tuberculosis the year it was completed, 1872.

     He was the most successful of the Scranton founders and invested in various businesses outside of Iron and Coal and was said to be a multimillionaire at the time of his death.
