Platt
Frederick J. Platt was born in Franklin Furnace, NJ in 1871. He was educated as mechanical and electrical engineer and organized the Scranton Electrical Construction Co. which manufactured electrical drills, appliances, and motors for use in the mines.

Dickson & Crawford, Located In Section 13 |
Dickson
Thomas Dickson worked his way up as a mule driver for the Delaware and Hudson Coal Co. to became the company's fifth President in 1869. He founded the Dickson Manufacturing Company on Penn Avenue in Scranton in 1856.
The site of his home is now occupied by the Scranton Cultural Center.
Crawford Shepherd
James L. Crawford was born in Noxen, PA in 1851 and worked his way up from a breaker boy to become President of the People's Coal Company. His home was located on Monroe Avenue near Linden and was the House of Detention before it was razed in 1992.
His step son James Shepherd had a house next to Crawford's and was an avid art collector.

Boies
The Boies family came to Scranton from Massachusetts in 1863.
Born in 1837, Col. Henry Martin Boies started a powder works at Archbald and Moosic, later the Moosic Powder Co. He acted as president of the company until it was taken over by Dupont Co.
In 1872 he became one of the organizers of the Third National Bank and was President of the Dickson Manufacturing Co. from 1883-87. As president of the YMCA he closed saloons on Sundays.
He played an active role in organizing the Scranton City Guard and served as commandant of the 13th regiments (later the National Guard of PA) from 1878 to 1883. Note that his mausoleum resembles an armory.
