Elisha Hitchcock

Elisha Hitchcock was born in 1778 at Claremont, NH.

He came to the Lackawanna Valley in 1809 at age 31 and built a gristmill.  A noted early settler of Slocum Hollow, he was married to Ruth Slocum, daughter of Ebenezer, for whom the area currently known as Scranton was named.

Many early settlers built small dams along the Roaring Brook to supply water power to the mill wheels, where grain was ground for local farmers.  As a skilled mill wright, it was Elisha's job to repair the wheels.
