Dunning (original 1/4 acre)

Benjamin Dunning was the brother of Gilbert Dunning, the founder of Elmhurst which was originally called Dunnings.   Gilbert was born in New Jersey in 1792 and came to Providence in 1821 before settling in Dunnings in the 1840's.

It was believed that Benjamin Dunnings, born in 1794 also came to Providence in the early 1820's.  He died in 1842 and is one of the earliest burials that the Lackawanna Historical Society was able to locate.

In the history of the Dunmore Cemetery, it is stated that Gabriel Dunning is believed to be the first burial but we have not been able to locate a marker for him.
